CT Bites Checks Out the New Sweet & Simple Store June 03 2013

"Sweet & Simple isn’t just your neighborhood cookie and brownie bake shop. They are continually adding items to their menu and now offer dinner rolls, and challah. Her new breakfast offerings are wildly popular and now incorporate almond rings and pecan Danish. While I was there last Saturday the doughnut muffins were flying off the counters. Children just love them! Looking for a more savory treat? Her customers cannot seem...

Connecticut Open House Day June 03 2013

The last 4 months have been a whirlwind of activity. The new Sweet & Simple® Bake Shop has been a tremendous undertaking and both more work and more fun than I could have imagined. A big thank you to my family, friends, employees and customers for the support. I look forward to being at work every day.     We have lots of new products (think gluten free and sugar...

Happy Holidays December 24 2012

Thank you to our customers and vendors for all your support in 2012. Thank you to our friends on social media for making the online baking community so special. Thank you to everyone working on our new bake shop. We are grateful for each and every one of you and we couldn't do it without you, that's for sure. We look forward to opening the retail store in early 2013....

Sweet & Simple Bake Shop October 27 2012

Big news. BIG. We’re opening a bake shop!It will be called Sweet & Simple Bake Shop, and located at 75 Hillside Road, Fairfield, Connecticut. We’ve signed the lease. We’ve submitted the plans to the Town of Fairfield. It’s happening. We. Are. So. Excited. Some of you know, we’ve been looking for a just-right-space for months. We wanted something not too small, not too big and definitely closer to home....

Cookie Baking Tips August 31 2012

Today I visited Morning Living on Martha Stewart Radio. So fun to see Brian Kelsey and meet Betsy Karetnick! They asked me to bring a recipe and some cookie baking tips. I went overboard and brought nearly 2 pages of my personal tips. Yup. I get excited about baking.  Turns out I was a wee bit nervous and all I remember from the "interview" is saying that I love the way...

King Arthur Flour Muffin Mixes {Giveaway} July 28 2012

I love trying new recipes and products. A couple weeks ago I tried 3 delicioso King Arthur Flour muffin mixes: Country Blueberry, Apple Cinnamon and Double Chocolate. Mixes come in handy when you're pinched for time. They also make great gifts! They do? Yes, they do! When my kids were in pre-school, we used to give a set of mixing bowls and a mix (usually pancakes) as a birthday gift...

Chocolate Prune Cake June 23 2012

This cake has lots of dried plums – better known as prunes – and it’s moist, tender and delicious.  Prunes are so tasty and, well, underrated. When you mention prunes, invariably someone laughs and/or makes a face and/or says, “Ewwwww.”  This was true last Friday when I gave my son and his good friend, Jamie, a loaf of the cake for their sleep over and Jamie made a face and...

Sweet & Simple Gives CTbites A Taste June 21 2012

Date Icebox Cookies June 05 2012

This is one of my favorite cookie recipes from my Grandma's recipe box: Date Icebox Cookies. Sometimes, I call them pinwheels because I love pinwheels (in cookie and decorative form), but she called them icebox cookies so I will, too. I've wanted to add these to the formal Sweet & Simple menu from day one... It's gonna happen one of these days! I'm thinking about 3-5 icebox cookie flavors at...

Connecticut, Memorial Day 2012 May 28 2012

Happy Memorial Day! So far, this has been a weekend of BBQs, American muscle cars and my mother-in-law’s beautiful garden. Let me summarize the Memorial Day weekend menu so far: hamburgers, baked beans, bbq chicken, cole slaw, hot dogs, hamburgers, hot dogs. Got all that? Yesterday, we went to the 18th Annual Memorial Day Weekend Car Show at Quinnipiac University. We've been going since we were dating and it's still...

Cheddar 'n' Bacon Corn Muffins May 19 2012

A simple breakfast. It's the May #baketogether from Abby Dodge! To show my appreciation for this monthly #baketogether that I enjoy so much, I'm giving away two of Abby's books. To make this giveaway a little sweeter - or savory,  depending on your taste! - Abby has graciously agreed to sign a copy of each book for the lucky winner! The books are The Weekend Baker and Desserts 4 Today. Yes,...

Maple Walnut Crumble Bread May 06 2012

I'm on a quick bread kick (say that 10 times fast).  Thank you to King Arthur Flour ("KAF") for sending me their Boyajian Natural Maple Flavor to try – I'm in love! - and for kindly sponsoring a giveaway on my blog.*  (Refer to my Banana Rum Bread post for an explanation of my informal baking relationship with KA.)As I've said before, like many home bakers, I'm a big fan of KAF and believe they've done...

Cocoa Angel Food Cake April 30 2012

Just in the knick of time, here I am slipping in my April #baketogether entry. I resisted, but just barely, the temptation to lemon up Abby’s gorgeous Tangerine Angel Food Cake. You may have figured by now out that lemon is my not-so-secret-weapon in the kitchen - lemon and Worcestershire sauce, but that’s a story for another day.Love the touch of cocoa in my version and the bit of extra vanilla....

Banana Rum Bread April 15 2012

Thank you to King Arthur Flour ("KAF") for sending me their Boyajian Natural Rum Flavor to try – it’s delicious! - and for kindly sponsoring a giveaway on my blog.*  Like many home bakers, I'm a big fan of KAF and believe they've done so much to keep American home baking traditions alive, relevant and fun. If you are a novice or the most advanced baker, they have something for you - including...

Mac and Cheese April 09 2012

This was the first recipe I posted when I launched the original Sweet & Simple website. It was just a few recipes then and no pictures whatsoever. Two years later, I still don’t know anyone who will turn down mac & cheese. This one is a little “fancy” because you make a white sauce, add grated cheese, combine everything together then bake it in the oven until golden brown and...

Almond Crackle Cookies - Two Ways April 01 2012

I clipped the original recipe for this post from a King Arthur catalog (2008). King Arthur calls them Almond Cloud Cookies, but they look like crackles to me. The original recipe is simple, calls for just a few ingredients and one mixing bowl. The cookies are slightly chewy and macaroon-ish and magically delicious. Some almond macaroon recipes combine the sugars, but here the confectioners’ sugar is sprinkled liberally over the unbaked cookies....

Early Spring, 2012 March 25 2012

Cherry blossom. It’s spring. To celebrate, this weekend I cleaned the house. By cleaned I mean I really cleaned. I scrubbed and polished and vacuumed and dusted and drank too much coffee - not necessarily in that order. A full Saturday in spring spent cleaning the house means I am already behind in the yard. And my garden, like all of New England, is waking up early this year. In addition...

Lemon, Pepper and Parmesan Sables - #baketogether March 18 2012

I was super excited about Abby Dodge’s March #baketogether project – savory sables. In my mind, French Sables are the ultimate, buttery icebox cookie. Ooooooh la la! My variation on Abby's recipe is lemon, pepper and Parmesan because those are three flavors I especially enjoy together. The brightness of the citrus, the warmth of the pepper and the nutty Parmesan all balanced out by Maldon, currently my fav sea salt....

Please Help Sweet & Simple "Get On The Shelf" March 11 2012

Sweet & Simple entered Walmart’s first-ever Get On The Shelf contest, and wants your vote!  Get On The Shelf is an “American Idol” style competition where contestants create a video featuring their product(s) and the public votes online for the winners. The grand prize winner’s product may be sold on www.walmart.com and may get shelf space in select Walmart stores. Walmart will also provide invaluable insight and advice on scaling...

Coconut Cake with Chocolate Espresso Sauce March 11 2012

The original recipe for this post is from Paci Restaurant in Southport, Connecticut. I love Paci's Coconut Cake so much that I wrote to Gourmet for it in July, 2000. I was pregnant, out of work, and apparently had a lot of time on my hands.  I'm pretty sure if I had called, and asked nicely, they would have shared the recipe. Bob Patchen and his wife, Donna, are two of the nicest people...

A night off for a great cause... March 04 2012

Thank you to my friend and Sweet & Simple photographer, Melani Lust, for including Sweet & Simple in the 10th Annual CancerCare Girls' Night Out. On Thursday, March 1st, I donated brownies, put on a pretty dress and joined a group of wonderful women raising money for a great cause. Melani Lust of Melani Lust Photography (left) and Michelle Jaffe (right) Congratulations to all the sponsors, especially Melani, and participants...

Rum Tropical Punch & A Wild Giveaway February 26 2012

One of the many treasured vintage cookbooks my mom has sent over the years is San Francisco à la Cart, by the Junior League of San Francisco (New York: Doubleday, 1979).Chapter II, Beverages, is so fun! My favorite recipe is for Rum Tropical. The original recipe description warns, “Watch out for this! It is deliciously lethal.” I made some minor changes to the recipe and the drink is at least as delicious...

Corn Muffins February 12 2012

Polka dots are cheery! Corn muffins are great – maybe even essential – to have in your baking repertoire. They work just as well with bacon and eggs for breakfast as they do with soup or chili later in the day. They also make a nice after school snack with a glass of milk. Unfortunately, they are often the size of softballs and too dry or too sweet or both....

Gingham Apron Giveaway! February 04 2012

via Michelle on Pinterest I love and collect aprons: some are new, some are vintage (from flea markets, antique stores) and most my mom makes for me for holidays and birthdays - and they’re my favorites (of course). I'm wearing one of her aprons in this picture. Isn't it pretty? I really DO wear them at home when I bake or cook, not just for pictures for work. They keep my clothes clean...

#NellysBigDay December 09 2011

“And …I said YESSSSS!”                    It happened one November midnight, in Twitterverse, we saw this tweet from our dear Nelly @nella22. Without missing a beat, we all knew Nelly had “said YES” to her beloved “M, as she sweetly calls Brian Murray, her fiancé. So here we are, Nelly dear, your friends in the food world, wishing you and Brian, all the best. And with our wishes, a simple recipe with...

Halloween 2011 October 30 2011

Just wow!I was blown away by these costumes last night...truly Sweet & Simple. My friends, Tim & Jenn, came to our little Halloween gathering last night dressed as Sweet & Simple cookies. Their 12 year-old twin daughters not only suggested the costumes but made them by hand, including the oversize side saddle "ribbons" - my original ribbon for Sweet & Simple cookie packages. For the ribbon, they dyed paper and stitched...

3 Short Twitter Stories October 27 2011

Alan's beautiful bowls. The foodie/cooking/baking Twitter community is one of my favorite online hangouts.  It’s a fun and creative group of people – a neighborhood, if you will – where everyone shares common interests. For the most part, I follow the foodie/baking community. But, I also enjoy following small business experts, social media experts, people I work with professionally, other local businesses and news media. For me and Sweet &...

Sweet & Simple's YouTube Channel October 17 2011

If you had told me two years ago, just before Sweet & Simple launched, that I would be sitting at my desk typing a blog post to introduce my new YouTube channel I would have called you bonkers and rolled my eyes. Seriously. Over the summer, I needed some pictures of myself holding Sweet & Simple pre-packaged baked goods. I asked Sandra Downie and Melani Lust, with whom I worked...

Chia Pumpkin Muffins October 16 2011

Sherwood Farm, Easton, CT, October 2011 Friends of mine recently started a business called Health Warrior - they sell premium chia seeds.  I’ve been enjoying their chia with yogurt and fruit for breakfast and was curious about using chia in baked goods. It turns out chia seeds are practically made for muffins. If you’ve baked with poppy seeds, the slight crunch of chia in this recipe won’t deter you. And...

Sweet & Simple Apple Cake October 09 2011

It's fall and time for apple recipes!  Thank you to my baker friend, Jennifer, for giving me the recipe I used as a starting point for this post: Teresa Apple Cake Supreme. Any recipe with “supreme” in the title has got to be a good place to start, right? The original recipe has more sugar, more cinnamon and a generous dose of orange juice. I reduced the sugar and cinnamon,...

Sweet and Simple In The Academy September 23 2011

The good folks at The Academy, an online magazine devoted to small business culture, recently sat down with me to ask questions about how it all started. I think really, though, they were after some free cupcakes. You can read the fresh dish here. [Source: The Academy]

Sweet & Simple Spice Cake September 21 2011

I have a weakness for vintage cookbooks. They’re just fun.  SO fun.  For this blog post, I decided to give a recipe from a vintage cookbook a whirl.  The recipe, for an old-fashioned spice cake, was inspired by Green Mountain Kitchen Recipes (Elizabeth McWhorter, 1948).  I found this spiral bound collection of recipes in a community thrift shop in Vermont last winter. It has sweet illustrations and several wonderful recipes –...

Caroline Dowd-Higgins Discusses My Business Recipe September 21 2011

I was recently featured on career coach Caroline Dowd-Higgins' blog. She tells the not so simple story of how I took my passion for baking and turned it into a business: "So how does the Chief Household Officer now manage a growing baking business in addition to her family? Michelle admits that work/life integration is a challenge. Her boys are all very excited about the business and in addition to...

Summer Part III, Sunflowers & Chuchee’s English Muffin Bread September 06 2011

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer at my house. Thanks to Hurricane Irene, I finally got my wish and the kids went back to school today instead of last week. I was very happy to have them home, it was like a bonus vacation for all of us.This August, when we went to Montauk, NY for our "real" vacation, I drove by LKL Farmstand in East Hampton, NY...

Summer Part II, Molly’s Blueberry Zucchini Bread August 13 2011

A few weeks ago I asked my sweet friend, Molly, if I could take a few pictures of her summer garden and animals for this blog. She agreed. We’ve been enjoying fresh and beautiful eggs from Molly’s hens for months and I wanted to meet them. Turns out the hens had nothing to say to me - but they sure are pretty, aren’t they? And look at this zucchini – blossom...

Guacamole August 13 2011

Avocados are my favorite fruit. So good! In a perfect world, I would have avocado with every meal. So, no surprise, I love guacamole. I take ripe avocados, sprinkle them with lemon juice and sea salt and then mash them up with a fork. That’s it! What about lime juice? Glad you asked. I’ve experimented with lime juice and it adds a whole different quality to the guacamole. Although equally...

Angel Hair Pasta with Cherry Tomatoes July 24 2011

One of my favorite recipes!Found this recipe in a New York Times Magazine article (“Kitchen Voyeur”, Jonathan Reynolds, 9-5-05), and then in Barefoot Contessa at Home (Ina Garten, 2006) as “Summer Garden Pasta.”This is best prepared in summer when local, organic tomatoes and basil are fresh and abundant. During the summer I make it once a week – no kidding! Because the tomatoes marinate for at least four hours, you...

Summer Part I and a “Recipe” for Boiled Corn July 20 2011

As much as I look forward to vacation - who doesn't? - Connecticut summers are a joy. I’m sharing some pictures of 3 places I especially love to visit during the summer months: Greenfield Farms, and 2 neighborhood gardens that always make me feel content – both designed and planted by their current owners.Greenfield Farms, the best local place to buy tomatoes, corn and zinnias is a short bike ride...

Easy Peasy Strawberry Rhubarb Bars June 27 2011

It all started with a question on Facebook. Did I have a rhubarb bar recipe? Nope. I was sent the link for this Best Rhubarb Bars recipe and it got me thinking I should have a rhubarb recipe! So, I ever so lovingly adapted Krumkake’s recipe. I tried the original recipe keeping in mind as I prepared it what my own baking preferences are and what I wanted in my...

Poached Dried Apricots in Star Anise Simple Syrup May 08 2011

London, 2011 Last month, I had The Most Delicious Dried Apricots Ever at HIX at the Albemarle. They were poached in simple syrup flavored with star anise and cinnamon. They were good, really good. They tasted familiar but with the surprise of star anise. How did I know they were flavored with star anise and cinnamon? Easy peasy! Those two whole spices were in the serving bowl. Nice detective work,...
